Kathy and Bob Kimmel

Kathy & Bob Kimmel folk artistsKathy Kimmel was born in 1936 in Alabama, and Bob Kimmel was born in 1935 in Oklahoma.

Bob spent most of his career employed by Florida State University, serving in many capacities including Vice President. Kathy worked independently in the antique business. Upon retirement, and looking for something they could enjoy together, they decided to make handcrafted items. Having always been drawn to 18th and 19th-century folk art, they began carving and painting bird sculptures reminiscent of that era.

Bob Kimmel used white pine to carve the small songbirds and Western cedar for the larger ones. The carvings were finished by Kathy Kimmel with acrylic paint and topped off with a protective matte finish.  The birds often became sculptures as they were incorporated into tree branches and mounted on interesting bases that Bob and Kathy had collected in their travels. Though birds were a preferred theme, they also branched out occasionally and made other interesting items.

Humor was a large factor in their art.  “If our work brings a smile to someone or brightens their day, then we have been successful.”  Sadly, Kathy Kimmel passed away in the spring of 2021.
