Kathy Kimmel was born in 1936 in Alabama, and Bob Kimmel was born in 1935 in Oklahoma.
Bob spent most of his career employed by Florida State University, serving in many capacities including Vice President. Kathy worked independently in the antique business. Upon retirement, they decided to try and create artwork. Having always been drawn to 18th and 19th-century folk art, they began carving and painting bird sculptures reminiscent of that era.
The Kimmels use white pine to carve their small songbirds and Western cedar for the larger ones. The carvings are finished with acrylic paint and topped off with a protective matte finish. The birds often become sculptures as they are incorporated into tree branches and mounted on interesting bases that Bob and Kathy collect in their travels.
Humor is a large factor in their art. "If our work brings a smile to someone or brightens their day, then we have been successful."
