Cedar Chan
“Though I was born and raised in the D.C. area, I have always had roots in southern Appalachia and have now lived in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina for over 30 years.
I have been a licensed massage therapist for as long as I have lived here and have always needed a creative way to express myself. Because I am primarily self-taught, I am not held by the constraints of any one tradition, though I am inspired by many.
I have gone from soft sculpture using various fabrics, wool, and found objects to now creating my sculptural pieces with clay which I find both challenging and therapeutic. While my hands are in clay, I can enter a place of spaciousness creating my own world.
Inter-species relationships and the narrative that they create have always attracted me and I am continuously taken by the endless possibilities of the imagination and my natural surroundings. The pieces that emerge seem to create themselves through a series of organic processes one building upon the next.
My goal for each one is to watch it unfold as it wants to…telling its own story.”
