Mary Klein was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1966 and was raised in Nashville, TN.
Mary remembers always doing something creative as a child and fell in love with painting around the age of 20. Self-taught and motivated by a lack of funds for art materials, Mary turned to trash — cast-offs such as lumber, windows, doors, old frames. She made them into constructions that became her starting canvas. She continues to do this, feeling that the materials bring past lives to her work. Her subject matter includes memory landscapes of the TN countryside and cityscapes from her years of living in Atlanta and New York.
Mary is best known for her pear artwork. Each one has a personality of its own and a unique setting. She never tires of painting pears – feeling the significance of the heart-shaped fruit in her daily life. Mary has survived three childhood heart surgeries and finds comfort in every pear painting she creates. It was only after many years of painting this shape that she saw the connection between her own heart and these fruits.
Mary Klein’s work is in galleries throughout the country. She has participated in hundreds of solo and group shows.
