Danette Sperry
Danette Sperry was born November 14, 1962, in Schenectady, NY.
She lives in a small town in northeast Georgia with her husband, folk artist John Sperry. They both love primitive antiques and art. Their charming farmhouse-style home is filled with their own art and other art they have collected over the years.
Danette has been creative since childhood. For the last 20 years or so, she has been a full-time artist making primitive furniture (farm tables, islands, etc.), sculptures (using reclaimed wood with vintage found objects), and paintings.
Danette’s paintings are 3-dimensional works of art. She describes the process as follows:
“First step: I cut up reclaimed wood for my frame, then I use large pieces of cabinet grade plywood and cut to the size wanted, hand sand all the wood, and make my framed piece, using wood glue and nails for strength.
Most of my pieces are large which provides me plenty of room to make my images and details. I sometimes add texture to the surface first and other times not, depending on what I’m making and the look I want to achieve. Then I draw everything out so I can begin to create. The look of my work can vary according to the textures and mediums I use. Most paintings can have several art mediums/textures in one piece. These are applied and worked using pallet knives, brushes and fine pottery tools to produce all the intricate image details. This is a tedious process but I find it healing and a great mind escape!
Once I have created all my images, I have to allow approximately 7-10 days of drying time before painting! During this time I usually start to cut and build another wood-framed piece.
I have a passion for art and work every day, all the while loving it! Most of my pieces take approximately 1 1/2- 2 months from start to finish, working 7 days a week. Once dry, adding my colors with paint is always exciting! After working on a piece so long, it is so rewarding to finally see it come together completed!
Message the gallery if you are interested in a piece and would like additional pictures. Thank you for your interest!”
