Jon Whiddon
Jon Whiddon was born on December 21, 1960 in Perry, GA.
While living in Athens, GA in 1999, Jon began to dabble with painting. In the fall of that year, he moved to his grandfather’s farm near Tifton, GA to care for his father who had suffered a stroke. During his father’s convalescence, Jon began to paint seriously as a way to occupy both his mind and his time.
As Jon explored the landscape of South Georgia that he had known as a child, he developed a new appreciation for its vast sky and linear farmland. Using a palette of saturated color and strong active brushstrokes, he began to represent what he saw and felt in the land. He said, ” I am interested in examining the South in a new way. “
Jon continued his artistic career in the North Georgia mountains, exploring different skies and vistas with a renewed sense of discovery. His favorite subjects were his vegetable garden, farm fields with mountain backgrounds, and the beloved yellow dog for which he is best known.
Jon Whiddon was only 48 years old when, in 2008, he passed away from complications due to esophageal cancer.
