Leonard McEwen

Photo of Leonard McEwen with his pottery for saleLeonard McEwen began working in folk pottery late in his career as a custom home builder in the West Georgia area. He donated thousands of his early works to the Carroll County Empty Bowls organization, and community interest in his work led him to begin to sell his decorative functional stoneware.

Leonard put equal work into making certain that his one-of-a-kind creations were as beautiful as they were functional in the kitchen. He devoted years to perfecting his single firing and multiple resist technique to produce visually arresting colors.

For the last decade-plus, Leonard partnered with his former student Lee Laney to form Tortured Pine Pottery Studio. The same degree of care goes into Lee’s sgrafito (a technique of scratching away the surface of one layer to reveal another layer) pottery.  The two friends enjoyed showing their work together almost as much as they enjoyed meeting new customers.

Leonard passed away on August 23, 2021, in Carrolton, Georgia.
